When in Hawaii, it is very important to make sure to carry enough cash – most of the local food places tend to be cash-only, and unlike New York City, there are NO Chase ATMs on that island. Case in point: bf and I actually ran out of cash on Tuesday and had to change around our lunch plans. Originally the plan was to split a garlic and butter combo plate lunch at Romy’s (which we eventually did later in the week) – which would typically come with about a dozen shrimp and two scoops of rice. Instead, due to all of our snacking earlier, we did not have enough cash leftover to be able to afford a full plate at Romy’s, which are a little bit more expensive for plate lunch – somewhere in the $13 range (and they don’t do half plates)! I was determined to have some Kahuku shrimp that day – so we drove a little bit down the street and found Giovanni’s shrimp truck!
Giovanni’s is actually the “more” famous, ball point pen scrawl covered Kahuku shrimp truck that is mentioned by every travel book that covers Oahu – I was very afraid that this was going to turn out to be a tourist trap. Fortunately for us, we had just enough cash to buy a half plate of their specialty: shrimp scampi with garlic rice – 6 shrimps with a scoop of white rice topped off with garlic sauce.
Turned out to be the perfect little bite for bf and I that afternoon – fresh caught shrimp in a savory, buttery, garlicy scampi sauce and doused with a bit of lemon – even better when served out of a truck!
