After a day of snorkeling in Sharks Cove and hiking around Puu O Mahuk Heiau, bf and I decided to go to Maguro-Ya for some hearty Japanese eats.
The restaurant is a little hole-in-the-wall type place, with everything in the menu being written mostly in Japanese and no English descriptions. The restaurant also has a fairly impressive sushi bar – we wanted to sit at the sushi bar but since we were ordering from the regular menu we had to sit at a regular table in the dining area.
The fact that most of the other diners were Japanese was both comforting (to know that this is a place that local Japanese Hawaiians eat), and intimidating (as we had no idea what exactly we were ordering!). The menu offers a few different types of dinner sets, each set includes its own side dishes and main entree. The best way to describe it is that it is similar to all of the little banchan that you get served in Korean restaurants – except that these are all little portions of Japanese side dishes! I ordered a sashimi and tempura set, and the bf opted for the full tempura set.
Sashimi: chef’s selection (ahi, hamachi, seared spicy ahi)
